THE 6 BEST CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN THE UK
Where to find the Christmas spirit this year
It’s the most glorious time of the year – a time of giving, eating and drinking – and should you wish it, doing all three at once and then going on the waltzers. The Christmas market is one of the great European traditions. To make sure you get the most of it we’ve created a Penhaligon’s guide to the best Christmas markets of 2022.
Winchester
WHEN: November 19th 2022 to December 22nd 2022
BEST FOR: food lovers
Winchester’s grand Cathedral hosts their Christmas market every year and with over 1000 years of British history in its grounds, it’s quite the setting. Stay for the sumptuous food offerings in the shadow of the cathedral. From French raclette to steaming mince pies and roasted chestnuts, there’s something for all food lovers. Make sure to sample the cauldron of bubbling mulled wine, too – hic!
Birmingham
WHEN: November 5th 2022 to December 23rd 2022
BEST FOR: European authenticity
There’s nothing quite like the Germanic markets of Germany and Austria – tankards sloshing to the brim with German beer, bratwurst, warm pretzels and stollen. If, however you don’t fancy leaving the UK this winter, go to Victoria Square to the Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market – the biggest German market outside of the continent.
Manchester
WHEN: November 8th 2022 to December 19th 2022
BEST FOR: drinking the night away
Every year Manchester hosts one of the biggest Christmas markets in the UK. With 300 stalls, across seven areas, they have triple the number that London has. Stretching from Albert Square, along King Street, to Exchange Square, Cathedral Gardens and Piccadilly Gardens, it’s a favourite for those seeking an evening of fun in the northern city. Sample some Glühwein, some Nordic Glocc, or some Italian Vin Boule and dance the night away.
London
WHEN: 18th November 2022 – 2nd January 2023
BEST FOR: Thrill seekers
Rides dot the wintry landscape like sentinels at watch, towering over London’s Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. Thrill seekers will enjoy the high-octane cirque berserk show, the outdoor skating ring, and the ice slide – but it’s the discovery ride which is for the real adrenaline junkies. It rotates unsuspecting punters 360-degrees on twin axes while spinning through the air. Not for the faint-hearted.
Blenheim Palace
WHEN: November 18th 2022 to January 2nd 2023
BEST FOR: A brush with history
Every year the Duke of Marlborough’s grand estate is taken over by wooden Christmas chalets that dot the Great Court. Head here for the astonishing history and Insta-worthy sights - but stay for the local cheese and the extraordinary palace gardens.
Norwich
WHEN: November 25th 2022 to November 28th 2022
BEST FOR: Locally sourced produce
Norwich’s oldest medieval church, St Peter Mancroft, hosts their annual Christmas market. There’s a huge emphasis on locally sourced produce – from handmade pottery, to ale, and other Christmas gifts. For those wanting to ensure their money ends up in the hands of local sellers, this one is a must.
