LONDON, BY PENHALIGON'S

Lively | Urban | Diverse

Good for: food markets, chic dining, post-work tipples

Borough is London at its most deliciously busy, where historic brick arches and narrowalleys pulse with a timeless urban energy. The air carries everything at once: conversation, creativity, and the faint possibility of a long lunch that gets slightly out of hand. It’s aneighbourhood that moves to the rhythm of clinking glasses, busy footsteps, and ideasbeing exchanged. Lively, generous, and unashamedly indulgent, Borough knows a goodthing when it tastes it.

THE GLOBE

London finds its voice again at Shakespeare’s Globe, where drama unfolds beneath open skies and the occasional obligatory cloud. The summer season pairs the sharp wit of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ with the bracing grit of ‘Mother Courage’. Stand, sit, or perch (feeling faintly Elizabethan) and remember that theatre, much like British weather, is bestwhen slightly unpredictable.

BOROUGH MARKET

Restraint is rarely the plan at Borough Market. Traders call, glasses clink, and the crowd circulates with determined enthusiasm, sampling from one market icon to the next, like Bread Ahead and Kappacasein. This global pantry has been feeding London in one form or another for centuries, and still manages to make lunch feel like an event rather than a necessity.

OMA

Perched just above the hum of Borough Market, OMA feels like a discreet escape to sunnier climes, if you squint generously. Greek at heart with Levantine tendencies, the menu leans into fire, salt, and summer: crudo, charred seafood, and dishes best paired witha chilled glass of something coastal. It’s a little sun-soaked, a little smoky, and hard to resist.

KOLAE

At Kolae, Borough Market’s usual bustle gives way to something rather more fiery. Inspired by southern Thai grilling, much of the menu passes briefly but decisively over open flames, basted in coconut-rich marinades. The grilled mussel skewers have become something of a house signature - proof that a stick and a good idea can go very far indeed.

FASHION & TEXTILE MUSEUM

A splash of colour on Bermondsey Street, the Fashion & Textile Museum is where London sharpens its silhouette. Come summer, Paint! Pattern! Print! holds court - an ode to bold British design and the art of making a statement without raising one’s voice. There are workshops, talks, and the occasional stitch of industry insight, showing that when done properly, fashion is never entirely frivolous.

AGORA

Hidden among the bustle of Borough Market, Agora brings the spirit of the Eastern Mediterranean to South London. Expect open-fire cooking, generous sharing plates and aroom that hums from lunch through to late evening. The best seat is at the counter, where the kitchen provides the entertainment. If ordering, don’t leave without the lamb and sumac skewers: succulent, tender, and richly caramelised. There’s a reason locals, market traders and in-the-know Londoners keep coming back.

THE GLOBE TAVERN

The Globe Tavern whirrs beneath Borough Market’s railway arches. The menu leans reassuringly British (think pies, fish and chips, the occasional virtuous vegetable) while guest ales from small-batch brewers offer a pint of something special. It’s the sort of place yousettle into: drink in hand, trains rumbling, London carrying on just outside.

DEAR DIARY

If the Globe Tavern looks faintly familiar, then cast your eyes upwards a tad. The façade doubled as Bridget Jones' flat in the iconic Bridget Jones Diary film. A slice of British cinema in the heart of London’s busiest market.

THE WHO'S WHO OF LONDON

Borough. Concrete, crossroads, and a hundred untold stories. What looks like chaos to others is order to him. The Omniscient Mr Thompson moves through it all like a rumour in a crowded room.
