After the tribulations of the day, what better than to bathe it all away? Aside from exquisite lotions and potions, what often is needed, we have found, is the company of a good book.
Yet seeking the perfect literary partner for your aqueous respite is no easy feat. Margaret Atwood or Zadie Smith? Márquez or Murakami? It may be tempting to reach for a time-tested tome, perhaps War and Peace or another opulent opus. But be warned, fellow bather, for a book too grand will only leave one a prune.
Don’t fret, however. We’ve traipsed the lengths of our library precisely for this purpose, and plucked from the shelves a few of our favourite bath-time titles. So without further ado, sit back, soak in and let the words flow forth.

THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR, NICOLA YOON
FOR HOPEFUL ROMANTICS AND LOVERS OF CHANCE ENCOUNTERS
Daniel is a dreamer, a poet, a romantic. Natasha is a pragmatist, through and through. Chalk and Camembert, if you will. Yet, as they often do say, opposites enchant. And so one fateful day, two strangers on two very different paths collide. We shall say no more but know this: if you cannot hold back the tears, let them cascade in cathartic bliss and worry not, the bath water will hide them.
MILK AND HONEY, RUPI KAUR
FOR TIME-SENSITIVE BATHERS AND LOVERS OF LIFE
Poetry is the perfect match for those short-lived baths that are so often an unfortunate reality. Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur is no exception – and is possibly her best collection to date. Instead of the flowery focus one may expect from such a delectable title, Milk and Honey touches on the darker side of life. Expect violence and loss, pain and heartache. But do not despair, it has its sweet moments, too. Much like life itself, the most bittersweet melody of them all.
WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING, DELIA OWENS
FOR EXTENDED SOAKS AND EXEMPLARY LESSON IN STORYTELLING
When handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the parochial town of Barkley Cove points its collective finger at Kya Clark – the alleged ‘Marsh Girl’. But as the murder mystery unfolds, whipsmart Kya defies small-town narrowness and spite. This tale of entangled hearts, the splendour of nature, and the complexity of belonging is what one might call “un-put-downable”.
THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE, V.E. SCHWAB
FOR DEVILISH DESIRES AND PIPING HOT BATHS
France, 1714. A young woman strikes a devilish deal (and who are we to judge?). Not in the metaphorical sense, oh no, more literally than ever: a deal with the devil for a life eternal. But, of course, there is always an exchange, and here the price is exceedingly high: to be forgotten forever, always and by all. Alas, that is far from the end. And as Addie steps into a bookstore, she meets a man who does not forget.

CEMETERY BOYS, AIDEN THOMAS
FOR EVERYONE AND EVERY BATH, ALTHOUGH SUNDAYS MAY BE BEST
Identity, magic, family, romance and mystery. Need you more for your perfect bath? We think not. Follow Yadriel as he navigates it all, from a traditional family unaccepting of his existence, to summoning an unexpected ghostly guest. Despite Yadriel’s fright, the ghost is not all he seems. As our tale continues with a change in the winds, who started as a foe may turn out to be someone entirely different. A contemporary necessity that grapples with the most pertinent issues of our time.
