SETTING THE SCENE FOR A SERENE, SCENTED BATHTIME

PREPARE FOR THE MOST PENHALIGON'S OF PAMPERINGS BY PERFECTING THE ART OF THE BATH

Penhaligon’s is rather partial to a posh wash – also known as a bath. A time to decompress from the hustle and bustle of daily life. A way to be transported to another world, if only for a while. A bath allows one to both languish and recharge, all in the comfort of relaxing waters.

There are ways, however, to elevate bathtime beyond the banal. So banish all children, pets or partners, commit this routine to memory and prepare to soak into bliss.

SET THE PLACE AGLOW

Dimmed lights and the flickering of a candle (or candles, plural, why not?) set the mood for any bath. Light unscented types to simply bask in candlelit glow, or add an aromatic twist with a favourite scented candle. Just keep in mind any competing fragrances if using perfumed bath oils or salts as well.

According to the room-by-room guide to scented candles, Comoros Pearl is a fine choice – clean and enlivening, evoking a warm ocean with a hint of spice. But frankly, any candle with notes of dry woods, citrus or herbs will create a spa-like atmosphere.

BATHE IN THE WARMTH OF A GOOD BOOK

For some, lying in the bathtub and letting thoughts wander is all they require. Others need imaginative things to do in the bath.

Might we recommend some good reads with fragrant allusions? In One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the scent of jasmine is a recurring motif of intense love and passion, woven into the dreamlike quality of the story.

In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the character of Daisy Buchanan is often associated with the scent of flowers – and the elusive and unattainable American Dream. Or the enduring classic, Pride and Prejudice, in which Jane Austen embraces scent to illuminate social nuances and character traits.

SOUNDS TO SOAK IN

Listening to music is another marvellous way to spend bathtime. Aural pleasures can help relax or rejuvenate. On that note, there is no wrong answer to the question of what one should listen to. But if a suggestion is indeed being sought, why not give RAYE a whirl? A homegrown sensation with an octave-leaping voice and a retro jazz-pop-R&B sound.

Or what about fellow British icon, David Bowie? Who defied convention and played different personas, all while influencing generations of artists. But beware: if Ziggy Stardust is on the playlist, bathtime karaoke might be in order.

Something more peaceful, perhaps? Anything played by pianist Lang Lang, or modern maestro Max Richter, will make for a perfectly melodious bathtime soundtrack.

NOW, DRAW THAT BATH!

Bath temperature is crucial – hot, but never hot-hot-hot. Playing a game of footsie with the water is not becoming in any way. If one fancies a wash whilst in the bath, feel free to lather on a fragranced body wash. Take in the scent and sigh deeply. Don’t be shy.

While soothing and serene, long soaks tend to dehydrate the skin. Body lotion to the rescue! Before snuggling up in one’s bathrobe, smooth lotion on dry skin to lock in moisture. Pay attention to places that tend to get rough or extra dry, like elbows, knees and knuckles.

While we’re on the subject, perhaps now is an opportune moment to browse our bath and body section?
