Penhaligon’s Sartorial is a masculine fragrance tailored to perfection. Perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour was inspired by the workrooms of Norton & Sons, Bespoke Tailors at No. 16 Savile Row.
Working with a model fougère structure, he has woven together woods, spices, floral notes and special accords with modern twists and heritage panache. For a new generation of gentlemen and dandies, Sartorial is a modern classic, rich in substance, long on style.
Sartorial is a contemporary interpretation of the fougère family of fragrances, a line of rich masculine scents tracing a lineage back to the original Fougère Royale made in 1882 by Houbigant. In Sartorial, the classic fougère notes of moss, tonka bean and lavender have been exquisitely stitched together with woods, leather, violet, honey, musks, ginger and black pepper. The thread running through Sartorial is beeswax, echoing the blocks of wax each thread is run across before stitching. This sweet smudged note ties together beautifully cut notes designed to create the perfect illusion of a tailor’s workroom – metal shears, steamed cloth, tobacco-tinted cabinetry, tailor’s chalk, dust and vintage paper patterns.
Bespoke tailoring is an art. Each item of clothing is fitted precisely to the body. An expert cutter understands the nuances of cloth on the body. A great perfumer understands the composition and harmony of notes, the structural curve, and the thread of change as fragrance meets skin. Each application of scent will be a perfect fit. After all, true style is invisible.
“A man should look as if he had bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care and then forgotten all about them.”
