The Art of Crystal: Silver Tree & Penhaligon’s

  • Silver Tree Crystal is an English design-led company, dedicated to making high quality, handmade lead crystal.

  • Over the years they have created a wide range of beautiful designs for Penhaligon’s including atomisers, perfume bottles, decanters and exquisite tableware.

Crystal is glass with approximately 24% lead oxide added to give a high refraction index. Held up to light, the pieces glitter and shine. The Silver Tree crystal is bespoke to Penhaligon’s and often inspired by vintage crystal and glass designs. Each piece is unique and instantly collectible. The crystal is hand-blown and engraved on diamond wheels. This unique blend of traditional skills and methods, enriched with cutting-edge design, creates the most luxurious, high-quality crystal.

From initial sketches through to state of the art computer-aided drawings, our designs take an early form and style.  But the true creativity and flair takes place in the blowing room as we experiment with the design concept and allow the crystal to evolve organically. Once the blown crystal is perfected, the design process moves into the cutting room where the pattern is skilfully refined.  You can never be sure how good a cut will look on a particular piece of glass until you try it.

Starting with liquid glass at 1120c the glass maker gathers and prepares the molten glass for blowing. He then skilfully shapes the molten crystal whilst continually turning the pipe before blowing air down it to create the first bubble in the glass.

The glass bubble is allowed to cool slightly before any additional gathers are added to build up sufficient crystal for the finished piece, and to create features such as the stem and foot. After cooling overnight in the annealing oven the glass is ready for cutting.

Our glass cutter first draws the desired cutting pattern onto the surface of each glass before painstakingly cutting every part of the pattern using a diamond coated wheel.  It’s purely down to the skill of the glass cutter to ensure the cuts are the correct size, shape, position and depth. The cut crystal is then polished to restore its brilliant clarity.

This unique blend of traditional skills and methods, enriched with cutting-edge design, creates the most luxurious, high-quality crystal.

The Silver Tree collections for Penhaligon’s vary in style, colour and cut.
