    Base Notes

    Labdanum, Oakmoss, Musk and Sandalwood
  • Created in 1911, this elegant cologne was created for Sir Percy Croft of the Croft port dynasty and named after the port producing region in Portugal; the Douro Valley. This stylish and mellow delight begins with sharp green limes and soapy bergamot, blending with garden fresh geranium and lily at the heart. Then the base notes of musk, oakmoss and sandalwood start to assert themselves, imparting a leathery quality. Underpinned with labdanum, a bitter resin that imparts a unique leathery note, Douro Eau de Portugal is a deep and intensely aromatic cologne.

A thrilling aspect of scent is it’s ability to aid our travels, be they a physical journey or a conjured journey of the imagination. Scent can take us far away from our ordinary residence to an exotic location, indeed for me as a city dweller, I often use intense woody notes to take me deep into the countryside as I spritz before bedtime for a forest filled sleep.

    • Best Fragrance Ever
    • by Jonathan
    • I have five different Penhaligon fragrances on my bathroom shelf. I have been using Douro (or Lords from when I first discovered it) for years. While I constantly get inquiries from women when I wear Penhaligon's, Douro always illicts the most attention. I have referred many women who wished to purchase some for the men in their lives. My only complaint is that the product line is limited to cologne.

    • This is a truly wonderful cologne for any man who seeks perfection. It is not overpowering to others but keeps its secret to its wearer.

    • Another Great Scent
    • by Marc
    • This is another great scent from Penhaligon's. It definitely reminds me of being in the UK somehow. I think the Notes listed above are pretty accurate. I definitely get a bit of a cinnamon note in the heart and base which I like. The only unfortunate thing is the longevity is not great. I have generally got about 4-5 hours out of it before I needed to reapply because it is not there any more. Other than that, this scent is fantastic, very refined, and perfect for a business setting, or any other situation you may find yourself in.

    • Light Touch Class
    • by Mark Whittaker
    • I am not sure why but I expected Douro to be a heavier scent , but its' light touch was a revelation . It initially has a fresh, clean smell but there is a stronger base that holds the attention and gives the cologne a much more lingeringering appeal . I love it .
