This February, the radiant solar floral, Ostara was the Official Scent of London Fashion Week. Inspired by the daffodil, Ostara is a modern interpretation of the delicate and incandescent flower. The candles were created exclusively for London Fashion Week, ensuring Somerset House was resonant of a sun drenched floral bouquet.
Penhaligon’s has created a short film with the help of Bespoke Film & Communication Agency to celebrate its ongoing partnership with the British Fashion Council. Russell Owen, Creative Director, talks us through the filming process and the end result!
“It was an absolute pleasure to have finally worked with Penhaligons! We’ve always loved the brand at Bespoke and hoped to one day work together and shoot something beautiful… the brand is unique in its styling, appearance and history so lends itself to beautiful visual realisation.
We shot with two camera men digitally using Sony F5 and F55 cameras with a selection of prime lenses to capture Somerset House during London Fashion Week. We wanted to focus on the architecture and energy around LFW, but in the end we realised Somerset House courtyard during LFW is quite a messy look! So we edited around the people and colours to keep the film looking clean and sleek. The second half was shot with the product in studio using a variety of lenses including macro for a crisp close up image. In post-production we used several techniques to animate the sequences together, making everything black and white apart from the product and yellow daffodils. We also wanted a sense of mystery at the opening to slowly reveal the product by warping the Somerset House imagery as if it was seen through the bottle.
The end result is a beautiful product shot made up of several layers. The product shot against a plain black background (not green screen when shooting glass!) with a still image of the BFC runway at Somerset House and then a new animated layer of paparazzi flashes above that to give a clean, considered ending that neatly captures the essence of fashion week.”
The film has been designed to reflect Penhaligon’s increasing presence at the high profile event. We have been the Official Scent of London Fashion Week for the last four seasons.
